| Tripura, which is
surrounded by Bangladesh from three
sides and parts of Assam and Mizoram
from one side, was formerly a princely
state. Agartala is the capital city
of Tripura.
You can visit the Ujjayanta Palace while
at Agartala. The palace was built
in the beginning of the 20th century and
spread over an area of 800 acres. It was
built in the Indo-Sarcenic style
with gardens on a lakefront in the Mughal
style. The palace has curved crafted
doors, wooden ceilings, three
domes and tiled floors. The building
nowadays houses the State Assembly of
Tripura.
Neermahal, also known as the 'Water
Palace' is built in the middle of the
Rudrasagar Lake. It was the summer
palace of the Maharaja Bir Bikram
Kishore Manikya and was constructed
in 1930. The palace shows the influence
of the Mughal architecture. The exterior
and the garden have been renovated but the
interior needs to be restored. The reflection
of the domes and pavilions look marvelous
in the lake. The rooms of the palace
can be approached only through the boats.
Udaipur, the former capital of
Tripura, has become an important market
town these days. The town is surrounded
by paddy fields and low hills.
The ruins of Jagannath Temple
can be seen on the southwestern bank
of the Jagannath Dighi Tank. 5 km
away from the town, on a small hillock in
front of a lake is the Temple of Tripura
Sundari. It is an important temple
built in the Bengali hut style of architecture.
It has a square sanctum and a large meeting
hall in front and is believed to be one
of the 51 Shanty Peeths of India.
The Bhubaneshwari Temple is the oldest
temple in the state. The images of Shiva,
Vishnu and other deities are carved
on the Chabimura Rock.
The Jampui hills are called the 'Land
of the Eternal Spring' and are
the 'orange basket' of Tripura.
The views of the Chittagong Hills,
Kanchanpur-Dasda Valley and the hill
ranges of Tripura and Mizoram can
be seen from the Jampui Hills. The
Watchtower on the Betlingchip is
3200 ft in height and offers a spectacular
view. This is perfect for trekking and
sauntering. |
